INFORMATION ABOUT OUR CATS
All of our adoptable adult cats are spayed or neutered, up-to-date on all shots, and tested for feline leukemia (FeLV) and FIV. Our adoption fee for adult cats is $90.
(Please note that we are unique in our commitment to FeLV- and FIV-positive cats, which many shelters consider unadoptable and euthanize. We believe that their lives are worth saving...and that they are adoptable in the right circumstances. The folks at the Virginia Beach SPCA put together this great fact sheet on why you should adopt a cat with FIV, and Colorado Animal Sanctuary has done the same for cats who are FeLV+.)
Our adoptable kittens aren't old enough to be spayed or neutered just yet, so we ask that adopters prepay for these services with their veterinarian and bring the receipt in at the time of adoption. We do not charge a fee directly for kitten adoptions.

INFORMATION ABOUT OUR DOGS
We have limited facilities at the Sanctuary in which to care for dogs, but we sometimes have dogs in foster care or are connected with dogs elsewhere that need loving forever homes.
Alfie
Alfie is a Cairn Terrier Schnauzer mix and is currently 8 weeks old. Alfie is a brother to Archie who was just adopted today (6/13/23).
Liam
Liam is a neutered male. Fully vaccinated and tested. We believe he is between six months to a year old.
He was brought in as a stray living in someone’s garage. Liam is timid until he gets to know you and then his little motor never stops
Lydia
Lydia is a spayed female. Fully tested and vaccinated. Lydia is around 9 years old.
She has been declawed which has caused her to have litter box problems, meaning she avoids it and goes on soft surfaces. It is painful for her to step and dig on litter.
Nutmeg
Nutmeg is a spayed female. Fully tested and vaccinated. Nutmeg is around 5-6 years old.
Nutmeg was living on the streets when she was brought to us. Nutmeg is shy but once she warms up to you, she is a sweetheart.
Molly
Molly is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2012. Her owner passed away so she came to live at the Ark.
Molly is the sweetest girl and a little on the shy side. If you are patient she will warm up to you.
Gertrude
Gertrude is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2019.
Gertrude was brought to us from a hoarding situation where the owner passed away and left no one to care for her and 14 other cats. Gertrude has no teeth.
Faith
Faith is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. We believe she was born around 2019.
Faith came to the ark with a litter of kittens and one of those kittens was IHOP. Faith was a barn cat and we believe she has had multiple litters. Faith is a sweet, quiet girl.
Lucy
Lucy was a barn cat and brought to the sanctuary with her two kittens. Sadly one of the kittens passed away.
Lucy is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2019 and is a very shy, timid cat.
Morris
Morris is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born around 2018. Morris is a very shy, timid cat and does not trust humans easily.
He was adopted and ran away. After 5 months of searching we were able to trap him and bring him back to the Ark.
Maui
Maui is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born around 2012.
Maui was an owner surrender. He is extremely timid but not mean.
OK
Ok is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2015. Ok looks kind of grumpy, but she is a very timid girl.
She was living in an abandoned house that was about to be torn down. She had no place to go so she came to the Ark.
Willow
Willow is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2015.
Willow came from a hoarding situation where the owner passed away and there was no one to care for her and 14 other cats. Willow was living outside under a trailer in below zero temps.
Lizzie Borden
Lizzie Borden is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2014. Lizzie came to us as a stray living on the streets and pregnant.
When Lizzie arrived, she was completely feral and her name suited her well. Over the years, she has mellowed and is now a very sweet and loving girl.
Hugo
Hugo is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born around 2015. His owner had moved away and left him behind.
Hugo lived on his own for over 6 months. Hugo is not trusting of humans.
Sweet Pea
Sweet Pea is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was living in a cat colony here in town. She was live-trapped and took immediately to the vet with an injury that had to be stitched up at the age of 8 weeks old.
Sweet pea was born in 2021. She trusts only a handful of people. She is a manx, meaning she has no tail.
Simba
Simba is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2018. Simba came to the sanctuary as a newborn found on a sidewalk.
She was bottle fed and despite being handled and fed by humans, she doesn't care for them.

Leroy

Leroy is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born around 2013.
He came in as a kitten living in a feral colony here in town. Leroy is a handsome boy but does not accept the human touch.
Pistol
(special needs)
Pistol is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born around 2013 and living on the streets of Houlton before he came to the Ark.
Pistol has serious mouth issues which requires constant vet care. He was feral when he came in and is now one of the sweetest cats you will ever meet.
Amazing Grace
(feral & special needs)
Amazing Grace is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2010 and living in a feral colony in Island Falls. She was the last cat to be caught.
Upon arrival at the vet, it was discovered she had been shot 3 times and her back leg was so badly fractured that it had to be amputated. Two bullets were also removed but the third could not be removed.
IHOP
IHOP is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born in 2022. IHOP came to the ark with his mom and silblings at 8 Weeks old.
IHOP was injured with a broken hind leg and a tail injury. The leg was so badly broken it had to be amputated and his tail injury has caused him to be paralyzed. The tail also had to be amputated and has left IHOP incontinent. We express IHOP’s bladder 2-3 times a day and the poop comes out on its own. IHOP is on a special diet.
Hope (tripod)
Hope is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2016. She was born with a birth defect and her front leg had to be amputated.
She is a very lovable and affectionate kitty but does not handle change well.
FERAL PETS
Leo (feral)
Leo is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born around 2014.
Leo came to the Ark with his mother and brother. They were living in an abandoned house. Leo is feral.
Charlie (feral)
Charlie is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born around 2014.
He was living in an abandoned house with his brother and mother when they were all brought in to the Ark. Charlie is feral.
George (feral)
George is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born around 2017.
George was living under a trailer in Patten with his siblings. George is feral.
Caroline (feral)
Caroline is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2017.
Caroline was living under a trailer with her siblings and is feral.
Twin (feral)
Twin is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born around 2010.
Twin is somewhat feral, but has a handful of people he trusts and will allow them to touch him.
Pearce (feral)
Pearce is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born around 2012. Pearce came to the Ark extremely sick with many injuries. He was a feral cat living on the streets.
Once at the sanctuary, he received the vet care he desperately needed and will live out his days here. Pearce is extremely feral. Humans are not his thing.
Ruby (feral)
Ruby is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2016.
Ruby was brought to us from a hoarding situation where the owner passed away, leaving no one to care for her and 14 other cats. Ruby is feral.
Wilma (feral)
Wilma is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. Wilma was born around 2016.
She came to The Ark from a hoarding situation where the owner passed away and there was no one to care for the cats. There were 16 cats in total and they were living outside in below zero temperatures. They were trapped one by one and brought to The Ark. Wilma is feral.
Eleanor (feral)
Eleanor is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2018.
Eleanor was living on the streets of Houlton when she was trapped and brought to the sanctuary. Eleanor is feral.
Elusive (feral)
Elusive is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. Elusive was born around 2015.
She was living in an abandoned barn that was being torn down. A very kind lady trapped her and brought her to The Ark. Elusive is semi feral and her name suits her well.
Mikey (feral)
Mikey is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He came to the Ark with 9 siblings. They were all in terrible shape. Two kitties passed away and the remaining siblings were adopted.
Mikey doesn't really care for the human touch and will run away when approached but is not a mean cat.
Grumpy Cat (feral)
Grumpy Cat is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was living in a cat colony that was live-trapped and taken to the sanctuary.
She was born around 2010 and is an old girl who has had many litters of kittens. Grumpy Cat is feral.
Yoda (feral)
Yoda is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born around 2017.
He was living under a trailer in Patten with his siblings. Yoda is feral.
Doug (feral)
Doug was a feral cat that was trapped while living in Amity. He was brought in with his sister and her two kittens.
Doug is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born around 2021. Doug is not trusting of humans.
Darla (feral)
Darla is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. Darla was born around 2022 and is feral.
Darla was living outside with her brother Doug and a kind gentleman was feeding them. Darla has had a litter of kittens and they were all brought to the Ark. Darla arrived with two kittens and she was already pregnant again. She then delivered 6 kittens at the ark, of which one was still born. A few weeks later Darla accepted 3 more kittens that had come in with no Mom and was an amazing mom. All of her kittens were adopted.
Walter (feral)
Walter is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He came to us from a hoarding situation.
He was trapped in the cold winter months. Walter is feral. We believe he was born around 2022.
Olivia (feral)
Olivia is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She came from a hoarding situation.
She was trapped in the cold winter months. Olivia is feral. Olivia was born around 2022
Lola (feral)
Lola is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2014. She came to the ark with her two sons Leo and Charlie.
All three cats are feral and were living in an abandoned house when they were rescued by a vet tech and brought to the Ark.
Lulu (feral)
Lulu is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was living in a feral cat colony here in town.
Lulu always looks a little cranky but is a beautiful girl. She does not welcome the human touch and will run and hiss when approached.
Sturgeon (feral)
Sturgeon is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born in 2013.
Sturgeon is feral. He lived in a feral colony here in Houlton and took shelter in an old abandoned school bus. He was live-trapped and came to live at the Ark.
Sam (feral)
Sam is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. Sam was born around 2000.
Sam was trapped in the dead of winter by a very caring person. The temperatures were below zero and it was bitter cold. Sam is very sweet but shy.
Cookie (feral)
Cookie is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2015.
Cookie was living under a trailer in Patten with her siblings. Cookie is feral.
Mae (feral)
Mae is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was trapped outside of the sanctuary as a feral kitten.
Mae was born around 2019 and is not trusting of humans.
Harry (feral)
Harry is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. He was born around 2017.
Harry was brought in from Patten where he was living under a trailer with his siblings. Harry is feral.
Savannah (feral)
Savannah is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She was born around 2017.
She was living under a trailer in Patten with her siblings. Savannah is feral.
Chops (feral)
Chops is a neutered male. Fully vaccinated and tested.
He is an older male at approximately 10 years of age. He has lived on the streets all of his life. Chops is feral.
FIV (feline immunodeficiency virus )
Pumpkin (FIV+)
Pumpkin is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. Pumpkin is also F.I.V. positive and born around 2016.
Pumpkin was living on the streets when he came to the Ark. He was very thin and had several battle scars. Pumpkin is a very sweet & lovable cat.
Eddie (FIV+)
Eddy is a neutered male, fully vaccinated and tested. Eddy has tested positive for F.I.V. He was born around 2018.
He was brought to us from the Presque Isle shelter as they do not keep F.I.V. positive cats. Eddy is our sweet and sour kitty. Loveable one minute or will bit the next minute. We use caution around Eddy.
Eve (FIV+)
Eve is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She came to the Ark from another rescue and is F.I.V positive.
Eve was found in terrible condition and from the looks of her she has had a hard life. Eve is a senior cat and is missing most of one ear. She is timid but not feral. She is very fearful but allows you to pet her and pick her up.
Spitfire (feral & FIV+)
Spitfire is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She is a feral cat and her name suits her well.
Spitfire came to us from a hoarding situation. She tested positive for FIV. Spitfire was born around 2000.
Silver (FIV+)
Silver is a spayed female who is F.I.V. positive and fully vaccinated. She was born around 2012. Silver was living in a feral cat colony in Houlton.
She was trapped and spayed because she tested positive for aids and she now calls the sanctuary her home. Silver does not welcome the human touch.
FeLV+ ( Feline leukemia virus )
Petoute (FeLV+)
Petoute is a spayed female, fully vaccinated and tested. She came to us from another rescue in Fort Kent. She was an owner surrender.
Unfortunately Petoute is leukemia positive and we believe she was born around 2021.
Sylvester (feral & FeLV+)
Sylvester is a neutered male, vaccinated and tested. We believe he was born around 2017.
He had taken up shelter at a local grain mill where they live-trapped him and brought him to us. Sylvester tested positive for leukemia and he is a feral cat.
Education Corner:
What is Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (F.I.V.):
F.I.V. is one of the most common and consequential infectious diseases of cats around the world. In infected cats, FIV attacks the immune system, leaving the cat vulnerable to many other infections. Although cats infected with FIV may appear normal for years, they eventually suffer from immune deficiency, which allows normally harmless bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and fungi found in the everyday environment to potentially cause severe illnesses. Though there is no cure for FIV, recent studies suggest that cats with FIV commonly live average life spans, as long as they are not also infected with feline leukemia virus.
The primary mode of transmission for FIV is through bite wounds from an infected cat. Casual, non-aggressive contact, such as sharing water bowls or mutual grooming, does not appear to be an efficient route of spreading the virus. As a result, cats in households with stable social structures where housemates do not fight are at little risk of acquiring FIV infections.
Only on rare occasions, an infected mother cat may transmit the infection to her kittens. However, if the mother becomes infected with FIV during her pregnancy, the transmission risk to the kittens is increased.
Sexual contact is not a significant means of spreading FIV among cats.
There is currently no vaccine commercially available to protect against FIV, so the best way to reduce risk is to limit contact with cats who may be infected with the disease by keeping cats indoors and testing all cats within the household.
What is Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV):
FeLV is one of the most common infectious diseases in cats, affecting between 2 and 3% of all cats in the United States. Infection rates are significantly higher (up to 30%) in cats that are ill or otherwise at high risk. Fortunately, the prevalence of FeLV in cats has decreased significantly in the past 25 years since the development of an effective vaccine and accurate testing procedures.
Cats persistently infected with FeLV serve as sources of infection for other cats. The virus is shed in saliva, nasal secretions, urine, feces, and milk of infected cats.
Cat-to-cat transfer of the virus may occur from a bite wound, during mutual grooming, and (rarely) through the shared use of litter boxes and feeding dishes.
Transmission can also take place from an infected mother cat to her kittens, either before they are born or while they are nursing.
FeLV does not survive long outside a cat's body – probably less than a few hours under normal household conditions.
Cats at greatest risk of FeLV infection are those that may be exposed to infected cats, either via prolonged close contact or through bite wounds. Such cats include cats living with infected cats or with cats of unknown infection status, cats allowed outdoors unsupervised where they may be bitten by an infected cat, and kittens born to infected mothers.
Kittens are much more susceptible to FeLV infection than are adult cats, and therefore are at the greatest risk of infection if exposed. However, even healthy adult cats can become infected if sufficiently exposed.
